Online Flash SWF Decompiler Decoder

June 6, 2014 Posted by Skai

* By decoding or decompiling a Flash (SWF) file, you should not be stealing any code.

I was looking for something to view the source code of a flash file when I came across the website It was pretty cool that no software was required to be installed; everything was web based.

The reason for trying to “rip” the source code of the flash file was solely for legal purpose. My client had a website that used flash as her banner. Since she was not experienced in web stuff, she faced problems after trying to switch her webhost.

When she wanted me to help her to update her website, I could not log into her old webhost. She told me she had switched webhost but I checked and realised her domain name was still pointing to the old server while her new webspace was empty. Fortunately, somehow her old webhost was still hosting her files, which was probably the reason why she thought she had already migrated her files successfully when she “changed webhosts”. Most of all, her entire website was running on client-side programming and thus, I could download the entire website page by page.

Eventually, the greatest problem I faced was that the flash banner did not run properly. I tried googling for tools to try to open the SWF file and found “Show My Code”. It helped me to “open” (decompile) the file and I finally realised the file was linked to another text file. By typing the full URL of the text file, I could retrieve it and thus fix up the entire website for my client.

Of course, I had to upload the entire website to her new webhost and point the domain to the new name servers.

March 14, 2013 Posted by Skai

Some people are complaining that Adobe PhotoShop 4 and newer versions are connecting to the internet at the start of the software. Be it that it may slow down your system or you simply do not trust any software to automatically connect to the internet due to privacy issue, you can prevent it.

Please note that this trick is not going to modify anything on the software.

Basically, there are just two steps:

1. Open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts using Notepad

2. At the bottom of the hosts file, copy the following to it.

This is it. The trick is to prevent your system from connecting to the websites.

However, you may face problems modifying the hosts file depending on your Windows security. You may need to right click on the Notepad file and run it as administrator before you open the hosts file on it.

Reverse Image Search Engine – Check Who has Stolen Your Images

February 18, 2012 Posted by Skai

TinEye is a reverse image search engine. Anyone can submit a picture to the website to find out about the image’s origin, the usage of it, if modified versions of it exists, or to find different versions of it with higher resolution.

As claimed by the company, TinEye is the first image search engine website to use image identification technology apart from keywords, metadata and watermarks. Whenever you submit an image to TinEye, it created an unique and compact digital signature or “fingerprint” for it before comparing the fingerprint to all images in their database to find matches. TinEye is able to find a partial fingerprint match. That means, TinEye can find exact matches even for images that have been edited, cropped or resized – it does not only find similar images.

TinEye crawls the web regularly for new images and they also accept contributions of complete online image collections.

TinEye is very useful to find who has stolen your images.

It also has add-on for Firefox, such that you can right click on an image to search for it.

It is free to use for non-commercial purpose.

How do I Block Porn Websites?

December 1, 2011 Posted by Skai

More children are exposed to pornography as internet becomes accessible to children at younger ages. Although schools have a part to play in sex education, parents should, however, be the prime leaders to their kids.

The exposure to pornography materials will subconsciously pass a wrong message to the children – sex without responsibility is acceptable and desirable – it is not. Pornography will encourage sexual expression and endangers the kids’ health. The number of teenagers who have contracted STDs and the number of pregnancy cases have increased over years.

More than half of the sex addicts have revealed that pornography is significant to their addiction. Studies have also suggested that the high exposure to pornography can prompt kids to act out sexually against more vulnerable kids. Experts in the field of childhood sexual abuse report that any premature sexual activity in children always suggests two possible stimulants: experience and exposure.

All responsible parents would want to educate their children on the proper values. However, the powerful irresponsible messages of pornography are doing the opposite.

We cannot avert the fact that commercials can affect a person’s mindset. For example, an advertisement on MacDonald’s may just make us feel hungry. How about advertisements on pornography that appears out of nowhere in the internet? Exposure to pornography interferes with a child’s development and identity.

There are endless explanation to why we should block pornography from children. In most families, both parents have to work and thus have less time to accompany their children and guide and monitor them when they are using the internet. Therefore, you must be wondering “How can I block porn?”

Some responsibility ISPs would do the job for us by blocking porn sites that they know of; however, there is a limit to what they can do. The number of porn websites is too large and new ones emerge daily. We cannot rely on our ISPs alone since their focus is to provide internet service and they are not acting as police.

So, how do I block porn? How do I filter porn websites from the decent ones?

You can download some anti porn programs and there are many such anti porn software available online, including free ones. However, do you really think that free software will work wonder? Let’s face the fact that every software developer needs to earn some money in order to survive and how much effort do you expect from volunteers compared to professionals who depend on producing high quality software to survive?

If you really want absolute protection of your children from porn websites, you should seriously consider purchasing reliable program to block porn sites, of course, at a cheap price. You should take a look at My Porn Blocker and consider purchasing the porn filtering software from them at an affordable and reasonable price.

How to download movies

November 30, 2011 Posted by Skai

Very often, we are busy with work and may tend to miss out some movies in the cinema. Or rather, many of us prefer to sit back and relax at home to watch our favourite movies at any time we want.

“Where can I download movies?” The thing that comes to mind is to download movies online.

But, streaming videos can be costly due to the high bandwidth and not many websites are providing appropriate services. Most websites would require you to download their special software before you can “download” movies from them. How do you ensure that the software does not come with malware or spyware?

Some websites may charge you as per video, while other set limitation or even require you to pay them recurring subscription fee for the movie clips. More “troublesome” website expects you to download movies in parts.

After many weeks of research in forums, I was recommended to a download full movies site that:

  • does not require any installation of software
  • has no recurring subscriptions required
  • has no limited movie content
  • has unlimited full movie downloads
  • has no time or viewing limits
  • has no subscription of any kind

There is only a one-time fee with 60 days money-back guarantee.

You should just check out the download movie site.

Singapore Web Hosting Server

November 15, 2011 Posted by Skai

If your website’s target audiences are from Singapore, you should probably get a Singapore server instead of a foreign one. Similarly, if you are targeting audience from a certain region, you should get a web server that is located nearby.

1. Speed

Pinging Singapore and Canada Web Servers

Pinging Singapore and Canada Web Servers from Singapore. The Singapore web server requires only 3ms compared to 259ms from the Canada server.

I did a test from Singapore by pinging two different servers located in both Singapore and Canada to see how long it will take to send data to and back.

The Singapore web server took 3 milliseconds while the Canada web server took 259 milliseconds.

Obviously the Singapore web server is faster since my current location is in Singapore – the traveling distance is much shorter.

The unit, millisecond, may be less than a second, which some people think is insignificant, but the difference between 3 and 259 milliseconds can be quite big. It will definitely make navigation around your website and uploading new files faster.

Imagine you are loading a webpage, your browser will send HTTP request to the web server before it processes data in HTML format to send you back. On every webpage, there are also other files such as images and JavaScript, which will require more requests. Of course, I would not say the server speed for the Singapore server is definitely faster but the difference in time required for the data to travel due to distance is obvious.

I have personally experienced using the two servers (Canada and Singapore) and I’m very amazed with the local server because of its speed.

2. Customer Service

Singapore is known to be a business hub where talents gather. Customer service satisfaction level is high in most businesses located in Singapore.

I have tried a few web hosting companies from other countries and the last one is based in Canada. All of them have very poor customer service. When I submit a ticket for major issue caused by the web hosting company, they can take half a day to get back to me. Whereas for minor issue, they may fix it a few days later and do not even bother to inform me. Overall, the customer service is really bad.

The most important thing about your website is the up-time (availability) and if the web hosting company does not resolve its server issue quick, you may lose many potential customers or visitors and the damage to business image is worse.

My current webhost is a company called Vodien, which is a Singapore company. The staffs have so far impressed me with their quickness and politeness. The super support team responses to my requests and enquiries within half an hour each time, and I almost have a culture shock.

3. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

There are many factors for your website to be ranked well by Google. If you are targeting visitors from a country, you should get a local server in the country. Google bot will find your website a better result if your server is located at the same country. Do note that Google websites from different countries will rank different websites differently. If your website is targeting Singaporeans, will rank your website better if your server is from a Singapore webhost.

4. Price

Apart from price, there is nothing that should stop you from getting a Singapore web hosting. You can get really good and cheap web hosting from other countries are most Singapore web hosting companies charge quite high price. But, hey! It is a good investment after all.

I have visited many Singapore web hosting sites and after browsing through their price lists, I’m really disappointed with them. Most of the Singapore web hosting companies are very stingy with the features such as number of SQL databases, web space, bandwidth limits… etc. They are already charging higher than foreign web hosts and I do expect some complete list of common features.

Eventually, I come across Vodien and I’m very sure their web hosting plans are some of the most reasonable ones you can find in Singapore. The most basic plan, enough for a SME to use, cost only SGD $8 per month.

Some of their clients are NUS, NTU, Singtel, CPF board, People’s Association, Courts, NCS, Knight Frank, IDA, Ministry of Health… etc. Even the government statutory boards trust their services!?

What are you waiting for? Try them.
